Why I Don't Do Communion Part 2

Passover vs communion timing explained, why the 14th day matters, & what as often as you eat this bread means, pointing to an annual observance.

Why I Don't Do Communion Part 2

April 21, 2026
If Passover is a memorial, does the exact timing matter? This short looks at why the night of Christ’s sacrifice was tied to a specific date and pattern. In the Old Testament, Passover was kept on the 14th day of the first month with no flexibility. That same structure carries into the New Testament. When Paul writes “as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,” was he pointing to frequency, or to a set annual observance? This breakdown explains why the timing was intentional and not something to move or repeat throughout the year. Part 2 of 3. Continue to Part 3 for the conclusion.

In some ways we can think of it kinda like the Fourth of July in this country.

The special moment of Christ’s sacrifice was meant to be remembered and kept with these very specific instructions; a memorial proclaiming the Lord‘s death the very same night He was betrayed.

As we know in the Old Testament, the people of Israel had to keep the Passover exactly on the 14th day of the first month. The timing was critical and wasn’t something they could delay or choose for themselves another day.

The timing was critical. It wasn’t something they could delay or choose for another day. That pattern is followed in the New Testament, and when Paul is inspired to write “as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup” that didn’t mean that it was intended to be done multiple times per year, rather that special occasion would take place on the anniversary  of the night Christ was taken.
