What's wrong with eating dogs or cats? I mean, or anything else for that matter. It seemed like there's been a lot of talk about that recently. (Trump- “In Springfield they're eating the dogs”.) It bothers a lot of people, which I get if it's your pet. But if it's not, then maybe?
No! Come on. That's crazy. We wouldn't do that! We wouldn't eat dogs and cats. (“Thousands of dogs are brutally killed for meat.”) Then again, we do. People kind of eat anything. (Drop it)
If you travel to different parts of the world, they'll eat things that would make me… or never cross my mind. I mean, literally never, even have a thought to do it. And they'll call it a delicacy. And people get all excited about eating these things. They'll pay all kinds of money for it. (“These are ant eggs. This single can here cost me $100.”)
But really, what is our standard? How do we choose between what's good and what's bad? How do we decide if this is something that I want to go ahead and eat or not? What's totally acceptable?
Well, believe it or not, the Bible actually does provide some guidelines. God, the one who made the animals, (Yeah buddy), He actually gives us some indications as far as what are good and what's not. And, for the most part, He tells us not to eat animals that eat garbage, animals that kill other animals, animals that eat dead animals, especially those that get smashed on the road.
With seafood, He says only those with fins and scales. He says not to eat the ones that just eat garbage or eat things off the bottom of the ocean floor. And again, that all kind of makes sense. I guess He thought we needed the guidelines.
Of course, usually we don't listen. We tell ourselves, “God doesn't mean it,” or “He is only talking to a small group of people.” It certainly isn't for all of mankind that would benefit from obeying God's health laws?
“I was looking at the science. I found a 2013 consumer report that discussed how 69% of raw pork samples were contaminated with a number of different bacteria and parasites.”
What's strange is that people usually take one Bible verse out of context, a misinterpretation of the dream that Peter had, and decide that we can now eat whatever we want. That wasn't even the point of Peter's vision! Most people know that God was showing him to rethink his approach on who God was calling and who God chooses to call--that people would be welcomed from every tribe, every nation, into the kingdom and family of God.
But here we are, people everywhere, eating anything that we find. Maybe we should look at it again. Maybe there's some good ideas in the Bible and it might even help us improve our overall health. Maybe we shouldn't eat dogs, or cats, or even pigs. Maybe, we should follow God's instructions. I don't know. Just thinking.
